About Dan Cumberland - the Meaning Movement

Like a lot of people, I thought I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

I had gone to school for non-profit work that was both personally and professionally meaningful to me.

But then I encountered what that work was really like, and I knew pretty quickly that it wasn't for me.

Unlike a lot of people, I didn't just try jobs until I found something that fits.

I wondered, "how in the world could anyone even know how to make these kinds of decisions?"

So I went back to school and studied how human beings find meaning in their work.

It involved a lot more shoegazing and psychology textbooks than most people have patience for, which is why I did it for you . . . well, for all of us, really.

Dan Cumberland

People are meaning-making machines.

We have reasons why we like our sports teams, choose our spouses, and even why we do or don't pay the extra $2 for guac.

When it comes to our work, we have to have meaning.

Most people will spend about 90,000 hours of their lives working - over 1/3 of their whole life. That's too much of our existence to invest in work that doesn't fulfill us.

So let's go together. Let's use the tools and skills they should've taught us from the day we started school to discover what makes us tick, what makes us light up, what gives each and every one of us a sense of meaning.

You're not alone. There's a whole movement of us on this journey together. Let's make our work mean something.

Current work: Today, through Dan Cumberland Labs, I help founders and organizations build human-centered AI systems that amplify what makes us most human. The Meaning Movement remains my home for helping individuals discover their calling and find meaningful work.
